Killa Crew bouted against the Ann Arbor Bruising Company in the first bout of the evening and quickly fell into penalty trouble. The Bruising Co. had quick and effective strategy that shut down Killas aggressive tactics. The final score was 263-141, with Ann Arbor taking the win. MVP Blocker for this bout was M. The Killamazoo Derby Darlins hosted a night of the living dead at the 411 Club in downtown Kalamazoo on May 13 with the sixth annual Zombie Prom. Skaters mingled with fans in undead fashions as DJs Tone Tokin, Ross the Sauce and Johnny Mystic spun an excellent mix that kept the party going well past midnight. This year, the Zombie Prom committee crowned former Killamazoo skater, Lady Hawk, as Prom King and current Killa skater, Slamador Dali, as Prom Queen. This was definitely a night to remember and it also helped raise over $600 in funds to keep the Killamazoo Derby Darlins rolling through the rest of the season. In case you missed your chance to dance with the undead, we’re still accepting any and all donations through Paypal. We can’t wait to see everyone at Zombie Prom again next year.
Recently, the Killamazoo Derby Darlins were invited to watch the West Michigan Mayhem tackle football team take on the Detroit Dark Angels. This was a big game for the Mayhem and we were excited to show up and support them take on their rivals.
Several lucky fans in the crowd received Killamazoo t-shirts and some even won free tickets to our next home bout!
The Mayhem will host their next home game against Indy Crash on June 1. So save the date on your calendar and make sure to head out to Mayors Riverfront Park for some football fun!
On Thursday, May 9th, five of the Killamazoo Derby Darlins, including Killa Crew captain Killamity Cate, visited Coloma Elementary School, where they spoke to over 400 grade schoolers.
Three separate groups heard the skaters explain the basic rules and techniques of roller derby, describe the safety equipment used during our games, and teach about teamwork, sportsmanship, and the importance of getting up after a fall. Each student also received a KDD pin, a free pass to Rollerworld, where the Derby Darlins hold all their practices, and a free ticket to our next home game on June 22nd.
Special thanks go out to Kayleen Dahlke, whose school presentation on Roller Derby sparked the idea for the visit, and to school principal Mr. Dygert for inviting us!
