Killamazoo Derby Darlins Aim For Victory Against Paper Valley

Kalamazoo, MI (April 29, 2010) – Southwest Michigan’s top roller derby team hopes to continue its win streak this Saturday, May 1, in a showdown with the Paper Valley Roller Girls of Appleton, Wisconsin. The game starts at 7 p.m. at the Hazel Gray building at the Kalamazoo County Expo Center & Fairground, 2900 Lake Street.

As seen in the film “Whip It,” modern roller derby features high-speed skaters, ice hockey-style body checks and constant scoring. Unlike old-fashioned 1970s roller derby, today’s players aren’t out to start fights… they want the high score!

Killamazoo is coming off an April 10 triumph over the Montreal Les Sexpos at home. The game featured a breakout performance from jammer Lily St. Smear, who claimed the lead in the second half with a 25-point scoring run that brought the crowd to its feet.

This will be the first time Killamazoo hosts Paper Valley, as they have traveled to defeat twice before. April 19th 2009 saw a closely matched game -as few as 3 points separating the teams in the 2nd period- with Paper Valley taking it 121-105. A long 8 months later Killamazoo packed up their gear and headed back to that same rink for a December rematch. They received the opposite of what they came for with the final score 220 Paper Valley, 39 Killamazoo.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and the bout begins at 7 p.m.

Advance ticket prices are: adult $10, student $9, children 6 through 12 $5. Ages 5 and under are free.
