Why roller derby? Back in 06' it seemed like something active to do to help me lose weight and get some aggression out. Nowadays it's an addiction that I can't seem to get enough of. I have already lost over 80lbs and dropped three sizes since I started playing four years ago.
What's the origin of your derby name? I'm severely Dyslexic and was reading a statement that said "81% of americans have Homicidal Tendencies, but only 9% act upon them." I messed it up and it just stuck. As for "Homo," I blame Delilah Danger.
What inspires you? Three sons who think their mom is totally awesome and a supportive hubby. I've been with this team since the beginning and couldn't see myself anywhere else or playing another sport.
Injuries? Two ruptured ovarian cysts, twice-bruised sternum (courtesy of Javelin), dislocated hip, three concussions (two minor, one major), and most recently, a dislocated kneecap.
What wheels do you use? Blue Cannibals.
What's your non-derby life like? I'm a nerd, a music junkie, and a hillbilly - all in one. I sit at home on my computer or watching netflix .... though usually both at same time. I drive a big truck: Power Ram 2500 V10 3/4 Ton - she's my baby. Also have an 88 Audi 5000 CS Quattro Wagon ...... for those of you who don't know what that is .... it's a turbo station wagon. My grocery-getter has more balls then your mustang. What? I also enjoy Enduro races, and hubby and I have a car each with derby logos. You won't find me out and about as much as I used to go, but I still enjoy a good show. Lots of local stuff and TONS of underground scene stuff. Sitting on 150g of tunes and growing.
Advice for someone interested in derby? It takes balls to play and determination to thrive. The whole adage "No Guts, No Glory" totally applies here. If you are afraid of getting hurt, breaking a nail, or a lot of bumps and bruises this ain't the sport for you. If you are looking for a crazy bunch of girls who are one giant Dysfunctional Family who push each other to be better in all aspects, then this is for you. It becomes an addiction and a way of life. You can't be a weekend warrior and make it in this sport. It takes control and you find yourself thinking derby in all aspects of your life. For me, the rewards far outweigh the risks. Derby has brought a great way to lose weight and get in better shape, a Home (literally got my house from a former teammate), and a whole other family complete with drama mamas, freaks, queers, and the best sisters I could ask for.
